Immanuel, Which Translated Means, “God with Us”
Throughout the Bible, we can see how God pays attention to the very tiniest of details. And, He does it all for our comfort and assurance. God doesn’t want us to always be filled with doubts and fears regarding His salvation, so all these details are in God’s word to help us. Many of those details can be seen in fulfilled prophecies that show us wondrous spiritual truths.
The fulfillment of one comforting prophecy can be seen in Matthew 1:20-23, as the angel assured Joseph that he should marry Mary, who became pregnant, but certainly not through him. The angel said,
“Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for that which has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for it is He who will save His people from their sins.”
Now all this took place that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying, “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.”
People might wonder at a puzzle. The angel said, “You shall call His name Jesus“. But, the prophecy, which is in Isaiah 7:14, said, “They shall call His name Immanuel“. So which is it?
Jesus grew up with the name “Jesus“, which means “Jehovah saved“, and is equivalent to “Joshua“ in the Hebrew language. Jesus does, indeed, save us from all our sins, and He is God, Jehovah. But, as Jesus preached the gospel, healed many, and did other miracles, the people spoke about how He was “God with us” — “Immanuel“. So, both details are true. Jesus is Jehovah, God Almighty, come to save us from our sins. And, Jesus is also truly Immanuel, “God with us“.
There are other Bible verses that tie these truths together. Some include:
Isaiah 9:6
For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us;And the government will rest on His shoulders;
And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
John 1:1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.John 1:14
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.1 Timothy 3:16
And by common confession great is the mystery of godliness:
He who was revealed in the flesh,
Was vindicated in the Spirit,
Beheld by angels,
Proclaimed among the nations,
Believed on in the world,
Taken up in glory.
It is a most marvelous thing how God speaks to us in His word. There are treasures there to build and strengthen our faith, because it is God teaching us personally. Let us open up His word and learn from our almighty Creator, Sustainer, and Savior. In His word, God truly is with us. We can enjoy His holy presence every day of our lives.
If we choose to reject God and His word, we should not complain about a lack of His presence in our lives.
So relieved and glad that Jesus is “God with us“, we say, “Hallelujah! Lord Jesus, there are no words to describe the awesomeness of Your desire to be with us, even though we are sinners. Thank You for Your faithfulness and love.”
Love,
Margaret
