They Deceived Him

They Deceived Him
We are sinners from birth. But, that is no excuse for wallowing in our sins and sinisterly enjoying them, as we love to tear others down. That’s how many act towards God. They greedily want all the goodies from God — and will pretend to be true to God in order to get those benefits — but, their hearts have no honest love for God or His ways.
God gives us an example of this in the Israelites as the LORD cared for them in their travels to the Promised Land. In the desert, they had various needs for food and water. Instead of humbly asking and trusting God to provide for their needs, they would bitterly complain. God would care for their needs and they would be satisfied — but would soon forget that they needed to keep on humbly and thankfully depending on the LORD for all their needs.
Their hearts would soon think only of themselves again. They forgot about all that God had done in the past to care for them. They realized that God was their Rock and Redeemer, but they didn’t want to honor that truth or live by it. So, Psalm 78:36 says,
But they deceived Him with their mouth
And lied to Him with their tongue.
A pretentious “thank You” to the LORD does not go unnoticed. God is more than compassionate and forgiving towards us all. He restrains His anger towards people, as He remembers that we are but sinful flesh. But, God’s love and patience need to be appreciated as we keep on giving Him thanks and praise for all that He does for us.
God knows our every thought, intent, and feeling. He knows when we are trying to deceive Him or others in order to selfishly get more for ourselves. Our deceitfulness does not go unnoticed. And, God will set the record straight in the end. In other words, we need to always consider what is in the depths of our hearts — and let God help us to grow in an honest faith, hope, and love.
With ever thankful hearts towards God’s patient mercy, we say, “Hallelujah! LORD, thank You for patiently guiding us to our heavenly home.”
Love,
Margaret
