The LORD  Who Was  On Our Side

We can be  ever so afraid  when the enemy  is so much greater  than we are.     We don’t stand  a chance.     When someone holds  something against us,  if they have some sort  of stronghold,  we become helpless.     Even if we feel  we are innocent  and a victim  of circumstance,  we find ourselves  without a defense.     There doesn’t seem  to be a thing  we can do.     We are caught  in a trap.     We have no strength left.

King David felt  that way  when he was hunted  by strong enemies,  who hated him  with a vile vengeance.     When God came  to his rescue,  he wrote  Psalm 124.     It reads,

“Had it not been  the LORD  who was  on our side,”
Let Israel  now say,
“Had it not been  the LORD  who was on our side,
When men rose up  against us;
Then they would have swallowed us alive,
When their anger  was kindled  against us;
Then  the waters  would have engulfed us,
The stream  would have swept over our soul.”

Blessed  be the LORD,
Who has not given us  to be torn  by their teeth.
Our soul  has escaped  as a bird out  of the snare  of the trapper;
The snare  is broken  and we have escaped.
Our help  is  in the name  of the LORD,
Who made heaven  and earth.

Our whole life time  is prone  to getting  into traps  of all sorts,  where the enemy  —  whether it be the devil  or an unbeliever  with vengeful motives  —  sets us up  into situations  where we feel helpless.       We don’t know what  to say.     We are powerless  to protect ourselves.

David blessed  the LORD  because  he knew  where his help  came from.     Note  how David wanted  all Israel  to acknowledge  where their help  and strength  came from.

All too often,  we are helped,  but we don’t acknowledge  the LORD  as our Helper.     The help  we received  was not an  “accident”  or a “coincidence”.     God’s love  works  to help us  in many ways,  and we really need  to bless His name  for His power  and protection.

As we give thanks  where thanks  is due,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     My Lord,  You are my Rock  and my Fortress,  my wondrous Help  in times  of trouble.     Blessed be Your name.”

Love,
Margaret
